Upper Newport Bay

in Newport Beach is an estuary – a place where fresh and salt water meet and mix. It is one of only a few remaining estuaries in Southern California and is home to nearly 200 species of birds, including several endangered species. There are also mammals, fish and native plants. A visitor can walk or bike through the entire estuary area. Cars have limited access.

The Bolsa Chica Conservancy

is a non-profit, non-political organization established to ensure the preservation, restoration and enhancement of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. Home of many different species of birds, fish and native plants. Walking is permitted in many sections of the preserve.

Irvine Regional Park

is nestled among a grove of heritage oak and sycamore trees. The rolling foothills surrounding the park are filled with a variety of wildlife. Trees and shaded turf areas provide a serene setting for leisure activities. Santiago Creek bisects the park. A pond with a stonework waterfall and footbridge is located in the center of the park. The unique landscape greatly enhances the park’s beauty.

Ocean Institute

At the Ocean Institute in Dana Point guests are invited to explore a world where they are not just an observer but one in which they ride the high seas aboard an historic tall ship, record observations of marine mammals, observe sea creatures, explore tide pools and learn the skills of a research scientist.
